Mc Cutcheon- what I have

Having read the listings of the slave holdings of the Mccutchen families in Williamsbirg Co., I was wondering if anyone has a listing of where the plantations were located. I am looking for the location of a McCutchen plantation near Suttons, WIlliamsburg Co., SC.

Linking names of plantations in this County with the names of the large holders on this list should not be a difficult research task, but I am not in SC. According to U.S. Census data, the 1860 Williamsburg County population included 5,187 whites, 43 "free colored" and 10,259 slaves. By the 1870 census, the white population had increased slightly to 5,346, while the "colored" population decreased slightly to 10,143. Unlike many other Counties in South Carolina, Williamsburg County did not seem to see a large outflow of freed slaves by 1870.

1860
SLAVEHOLDER LIST
MCCUTCHEN, James, 58 slaves, page 415B
MCCUTCHEN, M. A. & E., 76 slaves, page 422B
J.W. McCutchen 30 slaves
T.M.McCutchen 45 slaves

Williamsburg SURNAME MATCHES AMONG AFRICAN AMERICANS ON 1870 CENSUS:  MCCUTCHEN, pages 63, 28, 22, 30, 28, 22

In particular I am looking to find who owned Nathan McCutchen and wife Sarah Brown.

Sarah Mccutchen Johnson, Williamsburg, SC abt 1847 South Carolina Colored Female

The locations given must have to do with one of the following men which I cut out of a listing by a poster on the forum-

1. Wm. McCutchen - lived in Prince Frederick Parish SC (near Williamsburg)... deceased by May 1770...Dr. Thomas Wood appointed administrator as nearest kin...no will recorded...his inventory of 9 Jul 1771 shows debts owed John Brown, John Lockhart, Nathan Staunton...inventory witnessed by Wm. Hamilton, Wm. Grace and John Brown...a Wm. McCutchen was granted 150 acres in Craven Co. SC between Santee and PeeDee Rivers (generally near Williamsburg) on 1 Dec 1769...a Wm. McCutchen was also granted 100 acres on Lake Swamp Craven Co. SC 9 Jun 1766.

2. James McCutchen - earliest record is in Camden Dist. SC in 1737...some believe him to be father of Hugh McCutchen (see #7 below).

3. George McCutchen - living in Williamsburg as early as 1760...SC records show that on 14 Aug 1799 George Selby (see this same Selby referenced in #3 above) and John Cart were administrators of George McCutchen vs. John Rutledge, Judgement Roll. It appears this George was deceased by 1799, and was not therefore the son of Hugh's son George, b ca 1752, but note also that a Jane Rutledge is alleged to be the mother of Isabella Cooper, wife of Hugh #7 below.

4. Hugh McCutchen - md Isabella Cooper... SC grant recorded 29 Sep 1749 for 50 acres in Craven Co. SC...neighbor was Michael Harris (see Harris mentioned in #3 above)...ch. Were James, George, (both Rev War), Eleanor, and Jane...per Ms Elsie Swilley. a descendent of Hugh, Hugh arrived in SC w/Adam Strain (fil of James Cooper, bro of Hugh's wife Isabella), David Alexander, James McGowen, Wm. And Robert Seawright and they all rec'd land by 8 Feb 1737...note that Seawrights associated with Pioneer Robert's line of Augusta Co. VA, and also compare the names associated with Hugh to the below individuals who married these ch. of Wm. "Elder Billy" McCutchen also of Augusta Co. VA....John b 1799 md Sally Cooper, Wm. L b 1802 md Margaret Cooper, James b 1804 md Susanna Harris, Eliz. B 1806 md Wm. Strain, and Mary b 1810 md Wm. or Robert Cooper...coincidence?

Dear Ms Aldridge,

I read with interest your 2005 post to the McCutchen GenForum. I am
researching one of the sons of Elizabeth McCutchen (daughter of
Sarah/Sallie): Philip, who was a singer and guitarist and made recordings in
the mid-'30s. I should be very interested to know if you have found out
anything about the family's origins; you were speculating, I think, that
they might have derived their name from a white slave-owning McCutchen, but
you had not then identified the specific person or plantation.

If you can add anything to my knowledge of Philip McCutchen, I should be
most grateful. I have of course looked for him in public records; he was
enumerated, living with his mother, in 1920 (in Suttons) and 1930 (in
Sampit, Georgetown Co.). According to the SSDI, he was born on February 14,
1910 (though he is not enumerated with Elizabeth in the 1910 census, taken
three months later) and died in October 1964, location unspecified.

Best wishes,
